Elvis Presley, often called the “King of Rock and Roll,” is one of the most famous artists of all time in the industry for changing the music, his compelling stage presence, and iconic performances. His music was a combination of blues, gospel, and country, and was popular with audiences worldwide. However, the spotlight on Elvis’ achievements often leaves his wife, Priscilla Presley, in the shadows. Priscilla played a crucial role in his life, providing support and stability. Beyond her role as a wife and mother, she pursued her own interests by taking acting and business ventures. Priscilla is a biopic that was released in theaters late October, drawing from Priscilla’s personal accounts and bringing her life story into the spotlight.

Elvis and Priscilla were married for six years, meeting in 1959 when Elvis was 24 and Priscilla was just 14 years old.

In an essay for People, Priscilla said, “When we met, I was an impressionable 14-year-old. He was 24.” She also called him “handsomer than he appeared in films, younger and more vulnerable looking with his GI haircut.”

From 1960 to 1962, the pair communicated by phone when he went back to the United States while she remained in West Germany, where her step father was stationed in the air force. During this time, he began to date Nancy Sinatra, and rumors swirled about his involvement with other girls. In 1963, Priscilla’s parents allowed her to move into Elvis’ estate while she was still finishing high school. They were married in 1967.

Played by Cailee Spaney, Priscilla’s long overlooked life and emotional journey are shown. Priscilla Presley herself serves as an executive producer for the film.

When asked about how the film compared to the earlier biopic Elvis, which focused solely on Elvis’ life, San Marcos student Sheyenne Gallagher said, “Priscilla was so overlooked in Elvis’ movie and her movie showed that her life was important and should have been a bigger part.” Talking about Sheyenne’s opinion on the film, she said, “She was a huge part of his life and I can’t believe that I barely knew about her. But her actor played her role really well and the movie was great.”

It is essential to recognize the significant role played by Elvis’ wife, Priscilla Presley, in his life and legacy. Beyond the glamour of being the wife of a cultural icon, Priscilla contributed stability and pursued her own interests, all showcased in her recent biopic. The film sheds light on her overlooked life and emotional journey, providing a powerful perspective on the woman behind the legend. As Priscilla’s impact is brought to light, it becomes evident that her story is a crucial chapter in the narrative of the “King.” The biopic successfully addresses that Priscilla’s life was significant and deserving of recognition.
