With the falling of the leaves, and the scent of pumpkin spice in the air, comes an air of festive warmth and joy. The mark of Autumn brings changes to the climate, seasonal goods, as well as mental changes for millions of people. Seasonal depression is an all too common annual occurrence for many high schoolers.
Not to fear! If you want to learn a strategy about how to fight those pesky feelings of tiredness, lack of motivation, loneliness, and etc, you have come to the right place!
The most important step in combating seasonal depression is living healthy. Getting lots of sleep is one of the best things you can do for your life. As we learned in our health class, good sleep helps brain development, assists muscle growth, and dramatically boosts your mood.
Hydration is an overlooked necessity that many forget about. Drinking at least 5 or 6 glasses of water every day is such a good way to have more energy, improve cognitive function, and feel saturated.
As contradictory as it may seem, exercise actually boosts your energy throughout the day. Running, swimming, lifting weights, or even long walks are great ways to exercise your muscles as well as your mind. Putting your body through pain during a workout builds mental endurance and makes you thankful once you are finished. Along with both mental and physical health, exercising is an amazing way to meet new people. Whether it be lifting buddies at the gym, or teammates in a sport, exercise brings people together.
This brings me to my next strategy for beating seasonal depression, which is socializing! Talking to others is one of the best ways to put yourself in a better mood. Phone calls, video chats, or good old-fashioned hanging out in person. Long walks with a friend can clear your emotions and keep you level-headed along with feeling like you have a voice, and someone’s listening.
Next time you are feeling anxious, lonely, or hopeless, take a deep breath. Assess your current situation and ask yourself “How can I take care of myself today?”
