Every year during the month of October, we acknowledge those who have suffered, passed, or are suffering from breast cancer. According to a statistic from the American Cancer Society, “approximately 42,170 women die from breast cancer each year, and 316,950 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women.”There are a few different ways to support this cause.
The first support system is donating. Donations are one of the many ways you can help the patients and their families. You can donate to a GoFundMe for a more targeted donation or donate to a foundation for a broader contribution. Foundations like the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc., Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and Living Beyond Breast Cancer are all great foundations to consider donating to.The second way to show support is volunteering. There are many places in Santa Barbara to volunteer that need volunteers. Volunteering is also a way to contribute to the cause if you can’t afford to donate. If volunteering sparks your interest, an organization like the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara is a very well known foundation. The third and final way is by participating in local events and activities that are spreading awareness. Santa Barbara has plenty of events to partake in each year. For example, on October 7th through the 9th, the Breast Cancer Resource Center held a Pink Week to educate and increase awareness for breast cancer. Other activities include the Cheryl Diamond Santa Barbara 5k, and past events like The Pink Lounge held by the Breast Cancer Resource Center. The prices of these events can vary, but overall, these are a very good way to show your support and help keep organizations like the Breast Cancer Resource Center thriving.
At the end of the day, there are plenty of ways to help the women and the families who are struggling due to breast cancer.
According to the American Cancer Society, “At this time, there are more than 4 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.”
Breast cancer is an ongoing issue that affects millions of people each year. There are numerous ways to contribute to the cause. Especially during the month of October. Marathons, 5ks, galas, volunteering, and school held events are just some ways to spread awareness and show support.
