With the September-October heatwaves having ended, the weather finally shifting, and the temperatures dropping for good, it is clear that Thanksgiving is fast approaching. This sweet holiday is often overshadowed by the other holidays that it is sandwiched between—namely Christmas and Halloween—as people are in the spooky mood before Thanksgiving and in the holiday spirit shortly after. However, it’s important to not overlook this charming day of love, family, and food. With classic favorite dishes, like mashed potatoes, turkey, and cranberry sauce, along with family festivities, what’s not to love? Some people celebrate with lots of extended family, while others gather in smaller groups. Below we get a look into the different ways Royals celebrate this holiday.
Since senior Lucie Piersma was little, she and her cousins have crafted turkeys using apples and toothpicks with different dried fruits to represent the feathers. They would then print out a face to finish the turkey.
“We’ve been doing this tradition for so long, which is what makes it more special.” Piersma says. Consider trying this exciting project with your family! Not only is it fun—it is also a great way to spend more time with your family during the Thanksgiving holidays.
Another senior, Emme Newell, has a different tradition. She, her brother, and her parents make the trek to Montana to spend time with cousins, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. Throughout the day, the TV is turned on to display the different football games that are on. Her little cousin, San Marcos sophomore Henry Calcagno, looks forward to cheering on the Green Bay Packers this Thanksgiving.
While Thanksgiving is often associated with family, another lovely way to celebrate is to get together with friends and have a “Friendsgiving” dinner. Each person can volunteer to bring something such as mac and cheese, apple pie, or even stuffing. Gather at someone’s house and have a sweet evening in appreciation of your closest friends! The purpose of thanksgiving is to spend the week with your loved ones—whether they are friends, family, or both.
Hopefully these traditions spark ideas for you and your family to try this Thanksgiving. Or perhaps, there is already an established tradition with your loved ones. Either way, The King’s Page hopes you have a great week off, Royals!
