When the temperature drops and the days get shorter, winter becomes one of those seasons you either love or wish would hurry up and leave. But no matter which camp you fall into, choosing the right place to spend winter can totally change how you feel about it. Here’s one of many takes on some of the best spots (both near and far) to make the most of the season, which are not ranked in any particular order.
New York City: Visiting NYC in December feels like stepping into a movie. The giant Rockefeller tree, the iconic ice rink, the lights shining on every block; it’s all extra in the best way possible. Stepping outside in the city is almost like a fever dream. Even if you’re not a “big city” person, it’s hard not to get swept up in the energy. Where else can you go ice skating, shop vintage stores, see a Broadway show, and eat the best pizza of your life, all in one day? That’s right, nowhere else. Whether you want to live out your Gossip Girl dreams, or just want to experience the Big Apple magic, New York City is an excellent place to spend winter.
Lake Tahoe: If you’re someone who actually likes being cold, Lake Tahoe is basically winter paradise . Picture snowy mountains, cozy cabins, and hot chocolate that tastes way better just because you’re in the mountains. There’s something magical about staying warm in a rustic cabin when the wind is howling outside. The ski slopes and snowboarding trails are absolutely legendary for a reason, and even if you are not a pro, you can still have fun taking lessons or just goofing around in the snow with friends. If you ski, snowboard, or just want an excuse to wear fuzzy socks all day, Tahoe has got you covered.
Hawaii: On the complete other end of the spectrum, some people decide that a true winter is a suggestion, not a requirement. If the idea of freezing toes and icy commutes is not your cup of tea, why not follow the sun? Hawaii is the ultimate escape from the winter gloom. Imagine trading shivers for swimsuits, lounging on sun-soaked beaches, and exploring volcanic landscapes or vibrant local markets. It’s your chance to leave all your worries behind and just be completely present in the moment. While everyone else is digging out their snow boots, you could be snorkeling, hiking waterfalls, and making memories that sound like something out of a travel vlog. Sometimes, saying goodbye to winter for a few days is the best reset you could ask for.
Big Bear: Closer to home but still super fun, Big Bear is perfect for students and anyone for that matter who wants a winter trip without the stress of planning a full vacation. It is a short drive away from most SoCal cities, which makes it easy to plan a weekend trip without making it complicated. The town itself has an easygoing small-town vibe, with cute shops and hearty diners that feel like something out of some holiday movie. Whether you are into skiing, snowboarding, hiking scenic trails, or just there for building a snowman, there’s something for everyone. With all the school and extracurriculars on top of everything, Big Bear keeps things simple, fun, and stress-free.
Your Own Home: Sometimes the best place to spend winter is wherever you’re most comfortable under your own roof. Hot cocoa, fuzzy blankets, binging your favorite tv show, and no pressure to go anywhere. Winter break doesn’t have to mean planning, packing or spending money, sometimes it’s about slowing down and taking a breather. Playing board games with family, facetiming friends, or catching up on sleep can be just as satisfying as any big trip. In a world that’s always on the go, choosing to pause is a totally valid, and often underrated, way to make the most out of winter.

There is no right or wrong place to spend winter. No matter if you are chasing snow, sunshine, or just a break from your routine, winter is what you make of it. The best place isn’t the most expensive or the most social media worthy; it’s wherever you feel happiest, warmest, or most alive in the season. So this winter, go where it feels right… even if that’s just the couch. So with that said, wherever you are planning to spend your winter vacation for the holidays, far or near, happy holidays!
