As the first half of the school year winds down and the holiday season starts up, several of San Marcos’s clubs are integrating festive activities and joyful occurrences into their itineraries. Here are just a few of the clubs stepping up their game with regard to holiday cheer!
Library Club is playing an altered version of White Elephant with books, as well as learning how to make origami Christmas ornaments. Library Club Vice President Ariyana Haley says “As the year comes to a close, the library club would like to hit it off with a fun Christmas activity. The library club is always looking for readers, we are hoping to get more members during the spring semester!”
Jewish Club is also participating in several activities to celebrate Hanukkah, which this year begins on the 14th of December and ends on the 22nd. Their celebration will take place in the quad on Thursday, December 11th, with traditional Jewish latkes and donuts. “If you want to try out great food and learn about different culinary traditions, make sure to come!” says senior Lily Wallace, co-president of the Jewish Club. Jewish Club member Natalie Anderson added that “the Jewish Club is so fun and welcoming to everyone. It is so interesting to learn about a new culture!”
There is also an ASB-led coin drive for charity currently running until the 12th. Please donate if you can! Every day, the class that donates the most coins wins a pizza party. In addition, ASB is leading the candy cane grams in which they go across the campus, performing spiritful and extravagant carols to enthusiastic audiences in various classrooms. ASB has also planned a spirit week with days like Ugly Sweater Day and Candy Cane day to increase holiday spirit throughout the school.
Club celebrations of the holiday season are a great reminder that San Marcos has a vibrant and committed culture of clubs, committed to creating a fun and exciting environment for students with shared interests. If you aren’t a member of a club, consider joining one at the next club on rush. A few great clubs that may interest you include the Women in STEM club, the GSA (Gender-Sexuality Alliance), and the Live in the Light club. They can be a helpful way to meet new friends with similar interests and they look great on college applications as they show you are a committed member of a campus community.
