Start of SMHS Basketball Season

San Marcos Basketball is coming off of a great season last year. The Royals won the channel league and made it to CIFs. In CIF, they made it to two rounds. Their CIF run ended against Thousand Oaks high school due to a slow start. They shot the ball poorly which led to the deficit. For this upcoming season the Royals lost some key players but are excited and hopeful to give other players opportunities. The Royals also lost their old head Coach Jelani Hicks who has coached with the Royals for the past four years, and led them to three Channel League titles in a row. Replacing Hicks is Coach Kinzle, who has been in the basketball program for a while now but this is his first time being head coach of the varsity team.

Some of this year’s key role players on the team are Wyatt Miller and Micah Jacobi, who think the keys for consistency this year are, “Playing together, everyone stepping up, and everyone giving 110%.”

In order for the team to be successful this year they will need to accomplish these goals. The Royals have a tough season ahead.specially their games against  Oxnard high schools, and Los Angeles high school Teams. The Royals  home opener is in late October.

Micah Jacobi and Wyatt Miller are going to be the key players leading the Royals this season. As a team they are strong on offense, and have great shooters. Something they want to work on is not trying to do too much, and have everyone stay in their rolls.

“We want everyone to stick to what they know, and play the Royal brand of basketball,” said Wyatt Miller.

This Season the Royals are hoping to take home yet another Channel League Title, and make a run in CIF, and hopefully win a State Championship. They are also excited to be led by their new Coach Kinzler hoping to have a great first season as head coach of the royals basketball team.
